You see us keep talking about Adobe Illustrator. If you don’t know by now, you should read about what is so awesome about Adobe Illustrator.
But why should you learn Adobe Illustrator?
If you are thinking of a career change, or if you would like to be your own boss by becoming a freelancer, here’s why you should learn Adobe Illustrator.
You can offer graphic designing services.
Ever seen a poster and think, “Hey, I can design one better than that!”? Designing a poster is a lot more than just putting random text and images together on a piece of paper. You need to make sure that your message stands out clearly, and the images have to be eye-catching and complement your message. If you have an artistic eye, you probably could design a great-looking poster, provided you have the right tool.
Adobe Illustrator is so much more than just for designing posters. It is great for designing other promotional material such as flyers, brochures, and leaflets. And because it is a vector image manipulation software, you can come up with some original vector image artwork, including logo designs for business cards and business letterheads.
You don’t need a degree in graphic design (although it would help!). Clients want good work and lovely visuals, so if you have the visual acumen for it, you can start offering graphic designing services for companies who don’t have their own in-house designers, or even freelancers in non-graphic design fields (such as consultation, training, and real estate) and who may want their own promotional material that can be used to advertise their services.
You can design your own promotional material.
Or you might not want to offer graphic designing services, but you are thinking of becoming a freelancer in the field of your expertise. Perhaps you are (or are going to be) an independent financial consultant, or a real estate agent. Or perhaps you are planning to offer personal training services, software training, or motivational training. Or maybe you are a freelance art, dance, yoga, or music teacher.
If you wish to promote yourself, having eye-catching advertisements would definitely be in your favour. Of course you can stick to just very big text printed on coloured paper and stick them around your neighbourhood (we know many people who find this to be quite effective too), but if you want to stand out from the crowd, you need something different that catches people’s attention, especially if you want to use social media to promote yourself. Nothing catches the eye more than a well-designed graphic that appears on a newsfeed.
You can always engage the services of a graphic designer (freelancers should help each other out!), but for most of us, especially those of us who are just starting out, we may not have the budget to engage one.
So being able to use Adobe Illustrator to design your own artwork and promotional material would be a good starting ground. Once you have established yourself, you can hire a graphic designer later to make your future material even better, or even redesign your logos and namecards; unless you prefer to do them yourself, which wouldn’t hurt since you already know how to use Adobe Illustrator!
Why Adobe Illustrator and not another software?
Some people may prefer to use a desktop publishing software other than Adobe Illustrator. Every software has its own merits, but Adobe Illustrator is the leading desktop publishing software in the industry for obvious reasons. It is able to produce professional-looking artwork that is accepted by any print company for high-quality printing, and it works beautifully with Adobe Photoshop.
As a freelancer, why should you learn Adobe Photoshop? If you are already adept at using Adobe Illustrator, using Adobe Photoshop would enhance your work as you can use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate images and photos to complement your artwork even more. For example, instead of just putting a simple photo in a square box, you can cut out a specific object or silhouette to be the focus of your poster, or change the background to a colour that is more suitable for your brochure.
