Many people struggle with design after learning the skills to use the software, but do not worry, we are here to help. Just keep these few tips in your back pocket & we will have you designing like a pro!

1. RESEARCH & GET INSPIRATION

The internet is a wealth of inspiration you can look to, to inspire your own design. Do not copy any design, as this will get you into copyright problems, but instead you should create a design of your own by using other designs as your inspiration.

Research is planning for your designs, this doesn’t take long, but will instead allow you get things done very much faster.

2. MANAGE EMPTY SPACES

Many new designers do not feel the need for empty space in a design, and work to insert in as much information as possible into a design. This can lead to the design looking messy & like it is designed by an amateur. This is not just limited to text placement & size, but overall product or design element placement

As a new designer, it is important to refine the art of keeping your designs simple.
Leave a good amount of un-touch areas to allow your audience to rest when looking at your design, too much design or words will overwhelm and people looking at the design will not know what to focus on.

3. USE CONTRAST – WISELY

There is a reason to why white text on black background will always look appealing to us, this is due to the contrast, but of course, it can be boring sometimes, so we can up our designs skills by changing up the contrast factor.

Contrast is the best way to make your design stand out without any fancy effects. And this is not just limited to colour contrast but element contrast as well. Such as using a San Serif Font with a Serif font to make a word stand out.

This is a simple & easy way to make you design POP, and give it PERSONALITY.

4. RESEARCH COLOUR PALATTES

The importance of colours can never be under estimated. Choosing the correct colours will help you build the right mood for your design, and also the harmony of colours will make your design look much more professional as well.

One way to test your colour selection is to put it side by side (like the image below) and see if the colours match. Even though a colour palette is suppose to be harmonious, you can still have one contrast colour for items you want to stand out in the design.

Other than using colour palettes, you can also choose colours from the image you are working on.
This is an easy way to choose a colour for your text and ensure that fits harmoniously with your design, all while looking professional even though it took you basically less than 5 minutes to create a semi transparent box and type out the words.

5. USE TRANSPARENCY (OPACITY) & THIN LINES

This is like a trick no one talks about but it works like a charm all the time. When in doubt, lower the opacity (transparency setting).

Using transparency can easily make your design look much more professional, as you have just created something that a simple mobile app is not able to do (Some mobile apps also do this nowadays to make designs look more professional)

You can easily add thin lines to section off messages as well make your design look more elegant.

6. KEEP VISUAL CONSISTENCY – THEME

There is a reason why big brands insist on using a specific font, colour and style on all their marketing materials, this is because consistency is important when you are looking to convey a message to your customers.

The consistency of text (Font), colour & logo elements (like flowing lines or sharp shapes) will help with visual recognition for your brand image & the messages you communicate in your designs.

7. PAY ATTENTION TO ALIGNMENT

Once you have done all the tips above, just before exporting or saving your finalise design, make sure everything is aligned. This is often overlooked by new designers or thought to be unimportant.

However, this simple step of ensuring proper alignment will make your design look professional & presentable. Often masterpieces are determined by the small details, for designers this would be one of the details that will determine your masterpiece.
